Website Analysis

    • TASK: What kind of information determines purpose, audience, and audience needs?

  • 1) Contrast the PBS site for adults, www.pbs.org, with their site for kids, www.pbskids.org, discussing the following:
    • Purpose of the site,  Audience for the site, and How the site uses design principles to emphasise purpose and audience.

    • www.pbs.org = The purpose of the site is to advertise and show all the different genres and seasons of their programmes available. This helps to reach all adult audiences ranging from young adults to mature adults  because it showcases something for everyone. The audience are able to see all TV schedule further showing the programmes available. The PBS website uses basic colours and informative text to give a sophisticated look/feel. On the bar heading there is a donate button showing how the website is for a PBS funded by the public.

    • www.pbskids.org = Unlike the adults PBS website, the purpose of the children's to advertise the programmes through entertainment like games based on the shows themes. The purpose of the website is further showcased through the bright colours and simplistic layout - sound effects within the website and games are used to enhance the enjoyment and entice children to those specific shows.

  • 2) Evaluate 3 music artists' websites for design and content:
Ariana grande -  This website is used to promote Ariana Grande - her music, her merchandise and her perfume. Ariana, and her name, are clearly seen all over the website; there are photos from music videos that have links straight to the songs so it can be easily accessed and listened to. At the top of the screen, her 'events' and 'shop' are linked further promoting herself and her music. Her songs are in order of release with the newest at the top and although there's no biography about the artist, baby photos are alongside one of her songs and all her social media is linked on the main bar at the top of the screen.
Her website has the same colour and styled font throughout on the majority of songs and her products like merch and perfume; this font is clearly shown on the top header in Ariana Grande's name, and this links all the products back to Ariana. The website catches your attention to her music first by spreading her most recent release across the whole screen and her next songs continue this theme with different covers for the different songs.

Little Mix - This website promotes the group's music and  merchandise alongside showing what the girl band is about/who they are. This website has different pages for different products; the home page is a picture of the 4 girls with a bright pink background to stand out. Their name is clearly written at the top of the screen in white letters to contrast the background (their name is in the same font to all the products on their website). The pink colour scheme throughout the home page helps to communicate to a fun audience that this is a pop band with a stereotyped audience of girls. The artists themselves are seen on each page in large photos and even have a whole page to each of the 4 - explaining a bit about themselves and their childhood up to the present. Their fans can connect with the group through their biographies but also through all their social media listed at the bottom of every page. Overall the website is used to promote Little Mix's products and the girls themselves towards a target audience or potential new audiences - seen by biographies to give information about themselves to new people.

Taylor Swift - This website is very colourful and showcases all of Taylor's new songs, recently released, alongside her merchandise and videos. The photo used of Taylor is the front cover of her new album and is repeatedly shown on the home page - this may be to grab the readers attention towards the album to buy it. The background of the photo is the same and the website background; it is multicoloured with many pinks and blues mixed together and runs throughout the whole website, maybe further promoting the album. The main heading fonts are the same as Taylor Swift's name at the top of the main page. This website does not show or explain much about the artist, only promoting their products; however their social media is linked at the top of the home page and fans/readers can sign up at the bottom of the page to a newsletter. Overall this website is a promotion for Taylor Swifts music to her existing fans but not to many new ones due to the lack of pictures and information about Taylor as a person.
